As the seasons change and the air cools, India and Indians around the world eagerly anticipate one of most vibrant and colourful festivals: Navratri. This nine-night festival, dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga, holds a special place in the hearts of millions of Indians.

While Navratri is celebrated with fervour across India, it is in the vibrant state of Gujarat that the festival really comes alive and the spotlight shines on the glorious dance form known as Garba.

Description

Navratri, which translates to “nine nights,” is celebrated twice a year—once in the spring (Chaitra Navratri) and once in the autumn (Sharad Navratri). The latter is the more widely celebrated of the two and marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. During these nine nights and ten days, devotees across India observe fasting, pray, and perform traditional dances to honor the divine feminine energy.

While Navratri celebrations vary from region to region, in Gujarat it’s Garba that steals the limelight. Garba is a lively traditional folk dance characterised by its circular patterns and rhythmic clapping. It is performed to celebrate the divine and invoke the blessings of Goddess Durga.

What makes Garba truly special is its ability to bring communities together. During Navratri, open spaces and mandaps (temporary pavilions) are set up across Gujarat for Garba celebrations. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, caste, or creed, come together to dance the night away. It’s a time for socializing, forging new friendships, and celebrating unity in diversity.

Garba has transcended the boundaries of Gujarat and is now celebrated with great enthusiasm worldwide. In cities around the globe, you can find Navratri festivals with Garba dance at their core. These events serve as a reminder of the cultural richness and inclusivity of Indian traditions.

For the first time, the people of Ulm and beyond will have the opportunity to experience the joy and togetherness that comes with celebrating Navratri through the enchanting dance of Garba. Organized by the Gujarati Parivar in Ulm/Neu-Ulm with the support of Indische Gesellschaft Ulm, Neu-Ulm und Umgebung e.V (IGUNU), this inaugural Navratri celebration is a testament to the cultural diversity and unity that define the spirit of India and IGUNU.
